Fulfilling the Promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act at MU
HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN HELP...
Know your ADA responsibilities and ADA rights:
- as a University official
- as an individual with a disability
The ADA is a civil rights law. Title II of the ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities who are otherwise qualified to participate in programs, activities, and services of state and local public entities, such as MU.
Title II of the ADA applies to:
- employment practices,
- educational practices,
- construction, alteration, or renovation of buildings and facilities,
- communication with people with disabilities,
- criteria for program eligibility, and
- other programs and activities that may be discriminatory.
Support compliance efforts:
MU has a continuing responsibility to monitor and address compliance issues. Because of this continuing responsibility, the ADA requires a "public entity that employs 50 or more persons [to] designate at least one employee to coordinate its efforts to comply with and fulfill its responsibilities under Title II, including the investigation of complaints. A public entity shall make available the name, office address, and telephone number of any designated employee" (from the U. S. Department of Justice ADA Title II Technical Assistance Manual).
MU's designated ADA Coordinator is: Lee Henson, 465 McReynolds Hall, 573-884-7278, fax: 573-882-1809, hensonl@missouri.edu.
In addition, the ADA requires a public entity to adopt and publish grievance procedures providing for prompt and equitable resolution of complaints alleging any action that would be prohibited by Title II.
Informal grievances or complaints may be brought to the ADA Coordinator. If informal resolution is not achieved, formal grievances may be submitted to the Office of the Provost, Human Resource Services, or the Director of Student Life, for faculty, staff, or students respectively.
Please support compliance efforts by informing the ADA Coordinator about any MU disability-related issues that need attention.
Support independence, empowerment, and inclusion:
Some suggestions:
- Include disability in diversity programs and affirmative action initiatives.
- Learn more about disability issues. The ADA Coordinator can provide and refer you to sources of disability awareness and ADA training, assistive technology information, reviews of jobs to help determine essential functions and reasonable accommodations, and other disability-related technical assistance.
- Include faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on committees and other working groups, just as you would minorities and others from groups that might otherwise be unrepresented.
- Invite people with disabilities to share their experiences with you - in the classroom and as part of other MU events. For information about potential resources on and off campus, please contact the ADA Coordinator.
- Offer communication accessibility at MU events and in MU publications. Event planning guidelines are on the ADA Coordinator website.
Involve MU's network of ADA contacts/coordinators:
To improve campus self-evaluation, transition planning, and compliance monitoring, people in various MU units were appointed to help identify and advise on disability-related issues affecting their units.
If you have a disability-related complaint or concern about MU, or an idea for improving MU's accessibility, contact the campus ADA coordinator or a unit contact/coordinator:
