Advocacy

  • American Association of People with Disabilities - "A non-profit, non-partisan, cross-disability organization whose goals are unity, leadership and impact."
  • Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law - "Legal advocacy for the civil rights and human dignity of people with mental disability."
  • Council for Disability Rights - "On national, state, and local levels, the Council for Disability Rights advances the rights of people with disabilities. The Council promotes public policy and legislation, public awareness through education, and provides information and referral services."
  • Justice for All - "Justice For All and our JFA E-mail Network were formed to defend and advance disability rights and programs in the 104th Congress. One JFA goal is to work with national and state organizations of people with disabilities to get the word from Washington D.C. out to the grassroots."
  • National Council on Disability - "The National Council on Disability (NCD) is an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress on issues affecting 54 million Americans with disabilities. NCD is composed of 15 members appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate."
  • National Organization on Disability - "The National Organization on Disability promotes the full and equal participation of America's 54 million men, women and children with disabilities in all aspects of life."
  • Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights (PACER) - "PACER is a nonprofit organization that helps parents and families of children with disabilities. We have 25 programs assisting individuals with and without disabilities."

  • Disability Resources Monthly - "Disability Resources, inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established to promote and improve awareness, availability and accessibility of information that can help people with disabilities live, learn, love, work and play independently."
  • Family Village at the University of Wisconsin-Madison - "We are a global community that integrates information, resources, and communication opportunities on the Internet for persons with cognitive and other disabilities, for their families, and for those that provide them services and support."
  • National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC) - "We are funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to serve anyone, professional or lay person, who is interested in disability and rehabilitation, including consumers, family members, health professionals, educators, rehabilitation counselors, students, librarians, administrators, and researchers."
  • U.S. Government - a federal site designed to be a gateway for "bringing information on [all] U.S. federal programs, services, and resources to employers, Americans with disabilities, and their families." Start here if you are looking for disability-related federal government information.

  • MAINSTREAM Online - "is the presence of MAINSTREAM Magazine, for 23 years the leading news, advocacy and lifestyle zine for people with disabilities. MAINSTREAM, the print magazine, has suspended publication, but MAINSTREAM online will continue."
  • Mouth Magazine - "Mouth is a bi-monthly disability rights magazine whose readers' only special needs are for human rights and straight talk."
  • Newmobility.com - "the Web site for New Mobility Magazine and the leading online resource for Disability Culture and Lifestyle. Newmobility.com is a tremendous research and communication tool for anyone with an interest in disability issues."
  • Ragged Edge Magazine - "Ragged Edge magazine is successor to the award winning periodical, The Disability Rag.   • Mobility International USA (MIUSA) - "As a US-based national non-profit organization, the mission of Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is to empower people with disabilities around the world through international exchange, information, technical assistance and training, and to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities in international exchange and development programs."

Universal Design

  • Center for Universal Design - "The Center for Universal Design is a national research, information, and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops, and promotes universal design in housing, public and commercial facilities, and related products."
  • WGBH National Center for Accessible Media - "The CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) is a research and development facility that works to make media accessible to underserved populations such as disabled persons, minority language users, and people with low literacy skills."
  • Adaptive Environments - "A non-profit organization, AE was founded in 1978 to address the environmental issues that confront people with disabilities and elderly people. Adaptive Environments promotes accessibility as well as universal design through education programs, technical assistance, training, consulting, publications and design advocacy."
  • CAST - "To expand learning opportunities for all individuals, especially those with disabilities, through the research and development of innovative, technology-based educational resources and strategies."
  • Universal Design Institute - "A Canadian institute, located at the University of Manitoba, providing leadership in Universal Design advocacy."
